Laptop-only call

Raise the laptop so the camera is near eye level, add a separate keyboard if the raised position is permanent, and place a soft face light behind or just beside the screen.

External-monitor call

Put the camera close to the top-center of the screen that holds the other person's face. Keep the face light just to one side of that camera, not off at the room edge.

Window in the room

Small or shared space

1. Put the camera near eye level

You do not need a perfect eye-level measurement. Start by moving the lens out of the low, upward-looking laptop angle.

For an external monitor, put the webcam near the top-center of the screen used for conversation. Move the meeting window toward that camera. Looking at a face on the far side of a wide display makes the gaze visibly turn away even when the camera itself is centered.

Frame enough of the upper body to leave a little space above the head. Avoid using digital zoom merely to crop a room that could be simplified by moving the chair or camera.

2. Fix light direction before brightness

Light direction usually matters more than a lumen number.

Use this order:

  1. Put the brightest broad source in front of you or a little to one side.
  2. Reduce a bright source behind you with a blind, curtain, door, or different camera angle.
  3. Move a lamp before increasing its brightness.
  4. Check reflections in glasses, glossy furniture, and the monitor.
  5. Add a dedicated face light only if existing room light cannot hold the needed position throughout the call day.

A window is often the easiest broad source, but daylight changes. If calls happen after dark or the weather changes the result dramatically, repeatable artificial face light can be useful. Put it close to the camera axis, then move it slightly to one side for shape. Far-off side lighting can leave half the face much darker than the other half.

Do not point a harsh bare bulb directly at the face. Bounce a suitable lamp from a light wall or use a diffused source when the lamp and safety instructions permit it. Keep heat-producing lamps, cords, and stands stable and clear of paper, fabric, and walkways.

Task light and face light are not the same purchase

3. Control the window and visible room

If a window is behind the desk chair, try changing direction before buying a brighter light. Even a quarter-turn can move the bright area out of frame and give the face useful side light.

If the desk cannot move:

  • Lower a blind or curtain until the outdoor area is no longer the brightest object in the preview.
  • Move the camera closer and narrow the framing without relying on extreme digital zoom.
